The Gold Bug or Victoria's Revenge Public Screening; Director Q&A
El escarabajo de oro/The Gold Bug is the result of an initiative of a Danish Film Festival CPH:DOX which proposed to bring together two directors (one European, one non- European) to co-direct a film.
Moguillansky was paired with the Swedish director Fia- Stina Sandlund and this film is a comic fictional documentary which traces their struggle over what film they’ll make: “Sanlund” wants to use Buenos Aires as a cheap location for a feminist movie about Victoria Benedictsson, a nineteenth century Swedish writer and fore-runner of feminism whose artistic aspirations were frustrated and who committed suicide.
“Moguillansky”, however, persuades her to make a film about an Argentine nineteenth-century political figure (who also committed suicide) named Leandro Alem. Yet this alternate film is only a pretext to pursue a treasure putatively hidden in a town named after Alem. The film thus raises questions about how considerations of financing and distribution affect the topics that can be raised in Latin American films as well as the blurred lines between documentary and fiction.
