FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What are the UC Irvine graphic identity standards? A: Standards relating to logos, colors and graphic elements developed for use by the campus community in print and electronic communications, such as newsletters, Web sites, promotional materials and so on. Q: Why are they important? A: A clear and consistent visual identity is key to building a strong image for UC Irvine that connects and leverages the university’s many parts, and is easily recognized and understood by its wide-ranging publics. Q: Are these standards new? A: The current standards build on those in use since 2000. They were updated in 2005 to add the capability for approved academic and administrative units to attach their names to the UC Irvine family of logos in a consistent style. This nameplate capability expands the standards impact, and saves time and money that might have been spent creating unrelated unit logos. Q: How do the UC Irvine graphic identity standards apply to other university logos and legacy marks? A: These standards pertain to the UC Irvine campus and its various academic and administrative units. UCI Medical Center has its own graphic identity standards, as do certain other university units, including Athletics and the UCI Alumni Association. Logos vs. language Q: Why is the space between UC and Irvine closed in logos, but open in text references? A: UC Irvine logos are customized artwork created using the Minion typeface. They purposely incorporate the UCI initials, long part of the campus’s identity. However, closing the space between UC and Irvine in text references is awkward and unnecessary. See nomenclature guidelines. Q: When is it okay to use UCI? A: UCI is okay for familiar uses (e.g., text headlines, first text references for familiar audiences, and all second and subsequent references). Use of the legacy UCI logos also is permitted, when space limitations require. Logo usage and variations Q: When should the UC Irvine logo or its variations be used? A: To help build a strong and consistent identity, a UC Irvine logo or its variations should be included when designing campus print and electronic communications, such as brochures, newsletters and Web sites. Q: Where should logos be placed within communications pieces? A: Logo placement can vary depending upon the piece. Common practice is to place a logo on the front cover and/or back cover of a communications piece. For additional guidance or assistance, contact University Communications at 949-824-7919 or clove@uci.edu. Q: Why was the formal UC Irvine logo (featuring the full university name) modified from its earlier form? A: Two minor changes to the formal UC Irvine logo shortening the rule lines to be flush with the letters in UC Irvine and changing the Minion typeface used for the full university name from initial caps to large and small caps were integral to enabling the expanded unit nameplate capability. Q: Why are there different variations and treatments of the UC Irvine logos? A: The variations and treatments (e.g., UC Irvine with or without the full university name beneath it, boxed or unboxed, vertical or horizontal) provide the flexibility campus units and graphic designers traditionally require, as well as institutional consistency, in that all revolve around the “core” UC Irvine logo. Q: Which logo variations or treatments should be used for what? A: Different variations have different applications. The core, unboxed UC Irvine logo is suitable for most uses. The formal version (containing the full university name) applies when such clarity is required, as in materials targeting international audiences. Boxed treatments work well on busy backgrounds, horizontal treatments when vertical space is limited. Q: How does the UC Irvine seal differ from the UC seal, and how should these elements be used differently? A: The UC Irvine or campus seal includes the word Irvine at the bottom and is the only seal appropriate for use with the graphic identity standards. The UC seal includes the founding date of the University of California, 1868, at the bottom. Use of the UC seal requires advance approval from the Chancellors Office; call 949-824-5112 for assistance. Colors and graphic elements Q: What about logo color options? A: Logo color choice depends on the application. In general, blue logos are preferred, but there are many cases, such as on a blue background, where gold or white logos work best. For black and white applications, a black logo is appropriate. See logo variations. Q: Beyond logos, should materials be predominantly blue and gold? A: Incorporating the official UC Irvine blue and gold colors into designs can be an effective practice, but is not required that materials be predominantly (or even partially) blue and gold. Q: Why are two graphic elements the Anteater and UC Irvine seal available for use with logos? A: For certain applications, units may wish to add an element of fun (Anteater) or formality (UC Irvine seal) to a logo treatment. The Anteater may work for student applications, for example, and the seal for professional programs. Both elements do not work in all logo variations or treatments, however. See adding graphic elements. Proper staging distance Q: Should a proper staging distance be maintained between UC Irvine logos and other elements? A: Yes. In general, allow a distance equal to one-half the height of the I in Irvine between the edge of any UC Irvine logo and any other graphic or text element. For boxed logo variations, this half-I-height staging rule applies to the edge of the box. See staging guidelines. Q: Can the UC Irvine logos be combined with other logos? A: No. UC Irvine logos should not be combined with other logos into a single or connected mark. In applications where use of multiple logos is appropriate in materials denoting UC Irvine among multiple sponsors or presenters, for example follow the logo staging rules. Getting logos and assistance Q: Should individuals or units create their own unit nameplate logos using the guidelines in this site? A: No. This site provides downloadable files (in GIF, JPG and EPS formats) for the core and formal UC Irvine logos in the various color and treatment options available, and shows how the unit nameplate system works. University Communications will be glad to provide actual nameplate logo artwork and files to approved units in a reasonable time frame. Call 949-824-7919 or e-mail clove@uci.edu for assistance. Q: Where can I get the UC Irvine or unit nameplate logos, or help with other issues related to the graphic identity standards? A: The core and formal UC Irvine logos can be downloaded (in GIF, JPG or EPS formats) from this site. See logo variations. University Communications will be glad to provide nameplate logo artwork and files to approved units in a reasonable time frame.
