Speakers to address adapting coastal infrastructure to accommodate rising seas

Event: With devastation from subtropical storm Sandy fresh in their minds, UC Irvine researchers and coastal city planners will speak at the fall meeting of The Henry Samueli School of Engineering’s Civil & Environmental Engineering Affiliates on issues facing the West Coast.
Date: Friday, Nov. 9, 2012

7:30 a.m.: Opening remarks by Neil Barnsdale, president of CEE Affiliates and a UCI environmental engineering grad student

7:45 a.m.:   Professor Brett Sanders, chair of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering will speak on “The Rise & Fall of the Ocean: A Story of Tides, Waves & Long-Term Trends.” 

Additional presentations include:

  •   “Atlantis Is Sinking; Man the Lifeboats: Port of Long Beach Plans for Sea-Level Rise,” by Douglas A. Thiessen, managing director of engineering for the Port of Long Beach
  •   “Newport Beach Plans for Sea-Level Rise: Balboa Island Case Study,” by Robert Stein, assistant city engineer for Newport Beach
  •   “A Recipe for Accurate Coastal Flood Mapping in Urbanized Coastal Lowlands,” by Timu Gallien, UCI civil & environmental engineering grad student
Background: Members of UCI’s Civil & Environmental Engineering Affiliates include senior executives representing leading civil and environmental engineering firms and public agencies, as well as individual members. They provide support and guidance to the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, its programs and its students. They also act as liaisons between the professional civil and environmental engineering community in Southern California – particularly in Orange County – and the university.
