UC Irvine Medical Center earns Leapfrog Group’s top safety score

Rating reflects hospital’s commitment to patients

— Orange, Calif., June 06, 2012 —

UC Irvine Medical Center has been honored with a safety grade of A by The Leapfrog Group, an independent, national nonprofit created by employers and other large purchasers of healthcare benefits.

The Hospital Safety Score was calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s nine-member expert panel, using publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. Based on 26 measures, U.S. hospitals are assigned an A, B, C, D or F.

“UC Irvine’s top priority is providing the highest-quality care and ensuring the safety of every patient we treat,” said Dr. William Barron, chief medical officer. “We are continually seeking ways to improve that care and the patient experience.”

“It’s our goal to give patients the information they need and deserve before even entering a hospital,” said Leah Binder, CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the hospitals that earned an A and look forward to the day when all hospitals in the U.S. will earn the highest grade for putting patient safety first.”

A breakdown of UC Irvine’s score as it compares nationally and locally is available at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org, which also provides information on how people can protect themselves and loved ones during a hospital stay.
