Dennis Hastert, former speaker of the house, to deliver annual Peltason Lecture

Event: Former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Dennis Hastert will discuss his political career and reflect on the past, present and future of Washington, D.C., during UC Irvine’s annual Peltason Lecture, sponsored by the School of Social Sciences’ Center for the Study of Democracy.

Background:

Dennis Hastert was speaker of the house from 1999 to 2007, making him the country’s longest-serving Republican speaker. During his time in Washington, he helped chart the nation’s course through such challenges as 9/11 and controversial Medicare reform.

UCI’s School of Social Sciences is one of the world’s leading institutions for interdisciplinary social science research. In 2010, Times Higher Education deemed it one of the top 50 schools in the world for social science research, teaching and knowledge transfer. Of its six core doctoral programs, two are currently ranked in the top 10, three others are in the top 30, and one is in the top 40 among hundreds of programs worldwide. Globally recognized for its excellence, the school’s faculty includes 11 members of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, as well as accomplished junior professors who are creating new fields of inquiry.

The school’s Center for the Study of Democracy fosters academic research and education to provide a better understanding of the democratic process and comprises scholars from the departments of political science, sociology and economics.

The Peltason Lecture, established in 1999, honors the contributions of Jack W. Peltason, former University of California president and UCI chancellor emeritus, and his wife, Suzanne, to higher education and the study of democracy.
