Mohamed El-Erian, head of PIMCO, to deliver inaugural UCI social sciences lecture

Event: What role must politics, policies and markets play in turning around the global economy? Mohamed El-Erian, CEO and co-CIO of Pacific Investment Management Company, a Newport Beach-based investment firm that manages the world’s largest bond fund, will address this in the inaugural Social Sciences Dean’s Distinguished Lecture. The author of When Markets Collide, a New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-seller, El-Erian is a leading thinker and frequent commentator on the post-2008 U.S. financial crisis, the sovereign debt and euro-zone crisis, and political upheavals in the Middle East.

El-Erian holds master’s and doctoral degrees in economics from the University of Oxford and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Cambridge. A former member of the Harvard Business School faculty and CEO of Harvard Management Company, which manages Harvard’s endowment, he has served as managing director at Salomon Smith Barney/Citigroup in London and spent 15 years working with the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. A noted commentator and author, El-Erian writes regularly for The Huffington Post, the Financial Times, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal and other leading international publications. In addition to making the New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-seller lists, When Markets Collide was the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs 2008 Business Book of the Year. It was also named a book of the year by The Economist and one of the best business books of all time by The Independent in Britain.

UCI’s School of Social Sciences is one of the world’s leading institutions for interdisciplinary social science research. In 2010, Times Higher Education deemed it one of the top 50 schools in the world for social science research, teaching and knowledge transfer.
