ShareBiomedical business incubator to have grand opening at UC Irvine Medical Center
| Event: | The UC Irvine School of Medicine and Office of Research are hosting a grand opening for TechPortal Orange, the first clinically oriented biomedical incubator in Southern California. Modeled after the Calit2 TechPortal at UCI and other successful biotechnology incubators, TechPortal Orange – at UC Irvine Medical Center – will foster start-up companies based on UC Irvine intellectual property and accelerate the development of translational research into clinical applications. Event speakers include Jacob Levin, assistant vice chancellor for research development; Dr. Ralph V. Clayman, dean of the School of Medicine; Dr. Jaime Landman, professor and chair of urology; Elliot Botvinick, assistant professor of biomedical engineering; and Maneesh Goyal of Miramar Venture Partners. An open house will follow, and light refreshments will be provided. |

| Background: | TechPortal Orange – a medical business/technology incubator occupying 3,100 square feet of lab and office space in Shanbrom Hall, the heart of research at UC Irvine Medical Center – will provide resources for both start-ups and faculty interaction with industry. It will accommodate as many as 14 companies, and inquiries from potential tenants are already coming in. TechPortal Orange is based on TechPortal, a business/technology incubator in UCI’s California Institute for Telecommunications & Information Technology that was successfully launched in 2010 and houses five UCI-based start-ups. |
