The Newkirk Center for Science & Society and UC Irvine’s School of Social Ecology present “Empowering Sustainability on Earth,” featuring 70 emerging leaders from 20 countries discussing human-induced changes to the environment, with a focus on the world’s marine and freshwater resources. Countries represented are China, Thailand, South Korea, Canada, the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Brazil, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Egypt, Israel, India, Norway, Nigeria and South Africa. |

9-10:30 a.m.: Scott Bollens, UCI professor of planning, policy & design, discusses the world’s most bitterly divided cities, including Belfast, Beirut and Jerusalem. 2-3:30 p.m.: Mike Davis, MacArthur Fellow and author of City of Quartz, discusses the plight of the 1 billion people who inhabit “the planet of slums.” 4-5 p.m.: Allison Cook, director of special projects for the Story of Stuff Project, discusses capitalism and the effects of globalization on sustainability.
