Conference to mark launch of new book by UCI authors, ‘Death by China’

Event: The publication of Death by China, a new book by UC Irvine business professor Peter Navarro and entrepreneur, writer and UCI lecturer Greg Autry, will be celebrated at a panel discussion featuring a former Chinese spy, a global economist, academics and authors.

Background: Death by China: Confronting the Dragon – A Global Call to Action will be released this month by Financial Times Press. In the book, Navarro and Autry challenge the dominant paradigm of a “Chinese miracle,” featuring a progressive Chinese state heading toward political reform and driving global economic growth with its newfound embrace of capitalism.

Tearing away this delusion, Death by China documents the myriad ways in which a powerful, wealthy and corrupt Chinese Communist Party emboldened by a growing nationalistic frenzy is becoming the biggest threat to global peace, prosperity and health since Nazi Germany.

Navarro teaches economics and public policy at UCI. His articles on economics, business and China have appeared in a wide range of publications, from BusinessWeek, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal to the Harvard Business Review, the MIT Sloan Management Review and the Journal of Business. He appears frequently on Bloomberg TV and radio, CNN, CNBC and NPR, as well as on all three major network’s news shows.

Autry has published extensively on business, economics, politics, space and China and assisted with the revised edition of Navarro’s The Coming China Wars. He holds an MBA from UCI’s Paul Merage School of Business and has taught business strategy and macroeconomics at Merage, where he’s currently completing a doctorate. Autry recently addressed the National Association for Business Economics, the California Democratic Party convention and the Space 2010 Conference & Exposition.

Joining Navarro and Autry in the panel discussion will be:
  • Baiqiao Tang, author of My Two Chinas: The Memoir of a Chinese Counterrevolutionary, was a student leader during the 1989 democracy movement in China. After the Tiananmen Square massacre, he was charged with being a counterrevolutionary and imprisoned. He escaped to Hong Kong in 1991 and came to the U.S. as a political refugee in 1992. Tang is chair of the China Peace & Democracy Federation and the author of Anthems of Defeat (Human Rights Watch, 1992). He is frequently interviewed by national and international media, including ABC, NBC, the BBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek.

  • Gordon Chang, author of The Coming Collapse of China and Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes On the World, lived and worked as a lawyer in China and Hong Kong for almost two decades, most recently in Shanghai as counsel to the American law firm Paul, Weiss. His writings on China and North Korea have appeared in major general-interest and financial media, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He speaks to university audiences and think tanks and consults for the U.S. National Intelligence Council and the CIA, among others.

  • Li Fengzhi is a former intelligence officer for China’s Ministry of State Security who defected to the U.S. after realizing the truth about China’s repressive regime. He publicly quit the Chinese Communist Party in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., and also reminded the party’s “accomplices both inside and outside China that an unjust cause finds little support and that the evil never wins.”

  • Ian Fletcher, author of Free Trade Doesn’t Work: What Should Replace It & Why, is senior economist at the Coalition for a Prosperous America, a grassroots organization dedicated to fixing U.S. trade policies that comprises representatives from business, agriculture and labor. He was a research fellow at the U.S. Business & Industry Council and, before that, an economist in private practice. Educated at Columbia University and the University of Chicago, Fletcher lives in San Francisco.
