Top federal health official discusses addiction research and new treatments
Advances in science have generated compelling evidence that addiction is a complex disease of the brain. Often, the first time a drug is taken, it’s a choice – intended to achieve a pleasurable, short-lived emotional state. Repeated use disrupts the fine balance that normally exists among brain circuits underlying reward, motivation, memory and cognitive control. This discovery is leading to new and improved pharmaceutical, behavioral and combined treatments for addiction.| Event: | Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health, will speak on “Addiction & Self-Control: Research Discoveries Lead to Novel Treatments for Drug Addiction” as part of the Allergan Foundation Lecture Series in Modern Biology. |
