— Orange, Calif., July 14, 2010 —

UC Irvine Medical Center again is ranked among the nation's best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. This marks the medical center's 10th consecutive year on the "America's Best Hospitals" roster. Among the top 50 hospitals, UC Irvine is listed 30th for gynecology, 32nd for urology and 46th for ear, nose & throat. The annual report hits newsstands July 27 and is currently available online.

"UCI is committed to providing Orange County with the highest-quality healthcare," said Terry A. Belmont, CEO of UC Irvine Medical Center. "This recognition reflects our excellence in research, the quality of our treatments and patient care, and the dedication of our faculty, nurses and staff."

UCI is the only Orange County medical center ranked by U.S. News & World Report. Since 2001, the magazine has recognized UCI programs in cancer, digestive disorders, kidney disease and ear, nose & throat, with multiple rankings in urology, gynecology and geriatrics.

"The 2010 rankings are an indication of faculty excellence at UCI's School of Medicine and at our medical center," said Dr. Ralph V. Clayman, dean of the medical school and professor of urology. "This demonstrates the faculty's ability to deal with the most difficult cases in their respective fields."

Clayman said the university's commitment to its mission – Discover. Teach. Heal. – attracts physicians who are leaders in their fields.

U.S. News & World Report evaluated 4,852 hospitals and ranked 152 medical centers nationwide, or 3.1 percent, in 16 specialties based on their ability to treat the most challenging cases. Using methodology created by RTI International, the magazine assesses a hospital's reputation, mortality rate and patient care services. Additional points are awarded for nursing Magnet status or designation as a Level I trauma center - both of which apply to UC Irvine Medical Center.
