UC IRVINE RANKINGS UCI is ranked the 12th best public university in U.S. News & World Report’s 2004 annual rankings. Among both private and public colleges, UCI ranks 45th. (UCI tied with UC Santa Barbara and the University of Washington in both rankings.) In its most recent ranking of doctoral programs (1995**), the National Research Council ranks UCI 11th among public universities in overall quality of doctoral programs. Among all public and private universities, UCI ranks 27th. And eight UCI doctoral programs were ranked in the top 25. Two of these comparative literature and French ranked in the top 10. In a survey by Chemical and Engineering News, UCI tied with Harvard University for 15th place nationally in conferring doctoral degrees in chemistry. Both universities awarded 25 doctorates in chemistry during the 2001-02 academic year. UCI finished ahead of the California Institute of Technology and Stanford University. UCI also awarded 97 bachelor's degrees in chemistry good for second place nationally. The Wall Street Journal ranks The Paul Merage School of Business fourth in the nation for information technology education and 34th in the country among regional recruiters. U.S. News & World Report ranks the business school 49th overall in its annual rankings of graduate schools for 2005. Since 1995, U.S. News & World Report has ranked UCIs graduate programs and specialties among the top 50 in the nation: literary criticism and theory (1), creative writing program (6), organic chemistry (11), drama and theater (12), third-world literature (12), English program (15), management information systems (13), gender and literature (20), 19th- and 20th-century literature (22), psychology neurobiology and behavior (24), computer science (29), political science (29), chemistry (30), psychology cognitive science (30), history (32), fine arts (34), biology (36), physics (38), management (46), applied mathematics (47), mathematics (47), engineering (47). The Philosophical Gourmet Report, 2002-04, ranked the graduate program in philosophy 20th overall in the nation (UCI tied with UC San Diego). Worldwide, UCI is ranked among the top 10 for its programs in philosophy of physics, decision theory/rational choice theory/game theory, philosophy of math, philosophy of social science and early modern philosophy. It is ranked in the top 15 in medieval philosophy and general philosophy of science. The biennial online report ranked 90 graduate programs in philosophy in the English-speaking world, primarily on the basis of the quality of faculty. UCI's program is co-administered by the Logic and Philosophy of Science Department in the School of Social Sciences and the Philosophy Department in the School of Humanities. In The Princeton Review's Best 345 College Rankings for 2003, UCI placed 15th in the Diverse Student Population category, which assessed universities on the social and ethnic diversity of their student populations. Kiplinger Personal Finance ranked UCI #34 overall out of 100 in its biannual survey published Oct. 2002.
