SCHOOL OF LAW
Established by The Regents of the University of California in November 2006, UC Irvine’s School of Law is the first public law school established in the state in more than 40 years – and only the second public law school to exist in Southern California.

The school will focus on the Juris Doctor degree, which prepares students to practice law, and also offer the Master of Laws (LL.M.) and Doctor of the Science of Law (J.S.D.) degrees. In addition to providing a solid legal foundation, the school will draw on UCI’s strengths as a research university by building collaborations with science, engineering, business, technology, social policy and health sciences. Interprofessional programs such as an accelerated J.D./M.B.A. and a dual J.D. and Master of Public Health degree also will be developed.

The school received a founding gift from the Donald Bren Foundation to endow 11 faculty chairs and a dean’s chair; and generous support from the Joan Irvine Smith and Athalie R. Clarke Foundation, and Mark P. Robinson Jr. An inaugural class of about 65 students is expected to begin attending classes in fall 2009. The school eventually will grow to include 600 students and 30 to 40 full-time faculty members.

The school will seek accreditation from the American Bar Association as soon as possible.

The school intends to benefit underserved communities in several ways. As a public school, student fees will be lower than comparable private schools, which should enable more students from underrepresented groups to pursue a first-rate legal education. In addition, a law “clinic” will allow students to provide legal counsel to community members who would otherwise be unable to afford it. Other programs also will be designed to encourage graduates to pursue careers in public service.

The school will be housed temporarily on campus at Berkeley Place. The proposal calls for a new building and law library for the school, and several campus sites are currently under consideration.
