THE PAUL MERAGE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS This is a time of unprecedented economic and technological change. The companies that will be successful in the future are those well positioned to not only anticipate change, but to capitalize on it. Every business must recognize and confront a global economy that presents increasing opportunities and competitive threats. The challenge for business schools is not just to impart the fundamentals but to apply them to the dynamic world of business. The Paul Merage School of Business is meeting this challenge by structuring programs around three key business drivers: strategic innovation, the use of information technology, and analytic decision-making. The school’s pioneering curriculum and world-class faculty are attracting the best and the brightest students – and some of the world’s leading companies to recruit them. Companies like Verizon, IBM, The Boeing Company, HBO, and 20th Century Fox recognize the quality of our M.B.A.s. The Merage School has received numerous accolades from the media – BusinessWeek, U.S. News, The Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times have all recognized the programs’ quality. In the coming years, the school will continue to transform, to embrace the dynamics of business today, and to position our graduates for prominent career opportunities. Dean Andrew J. Policano Andrew Policano was named dean of The Paul Merage School of Business in 2004. Upon his arrival at UC Irvine in August 2004, Policano worked closely with Paul and Lilly Merage to finalize the generous $30 million gift that renamed the school in Merage’s honor. This gift – the largest in the history of the campus – has enabled the school to begin implementation on many projects and initiatives, including recruitment of the best and brightest faculty members and students. Policano’s arrival has generated a renewed interest in education and fundraising opportunities at the Merage School, and he is leading an aggressive campaign to increase the school’s long-term endowment. Classrooms have been remodeled with state-of-the-art technology and learning tools. The school’s network and contacts within the Orange County business community have expanded significantly by adding to the Dean’s Advisory Board. Prior to his appointment at the Merage School, Policano, who holds a doctorate in economics from Brown University and a bachelor’s in mathematics from SUNY Stony Brook, was dean of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business. During his tenure there, he guided an increase in the school’s endowment from $6 million to more than $95 million. He is a nationally recognized macro-economist, whose expertise includes monetary policy, economic forecasting, and the U.S. Social Security system. He is also a founding director of the Ph.D. Project, launched in 1994 to increase the diversity of business school faculty by attracting African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Native Americans to business doctoral programs. Additionally, Policano is a member of three corporate boards of directors, and has published in such journals and business periodicals as International Economic Review, Review of Economics and Statistics, Executive MBA Magazine, BizEd, MBA Newsletter, GMAC Selections, and the International Encyclopedia of Business Management. Distinctions and Awards: The Paul Merage School of Business has consistently been ranked as a top 50 business school by U.S. News, BusinessWeek, The Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times.
