ACCOLADES & DISTINCTIONS Rankings of note A great research university UCI is one of 62 universities in the U.S. and Canada elected to membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities. U.S. News & World Report ranks UCI as the 12th best public university in the nation. Excellence across the board The National Research Council ranks UCI 11th among public universities in overall quality of doctoral programs. Among all public and private universities, UCI ranks 27th. Eight doctoral programs rank in the top 25. Two of these comparative literature and French rank in the top 10. Graduate programs of distinction U.S. News & World Report rates UCI's graduate programs among the top 25 in several categories: literary criticism and theory (1), creative writing program (6), organic chemistry (11), drama and theater (12), third-world literature (12), English (15), management information systems (13), gender and literature (20), 19th- and 20th-century literature (22), and psychology – neurobiology and behavior (24). The leading edge The high-tech magazine eWeek named UCI one of the top 10 universities in the nation for information technology education. Logical conclusions The Philosophical Gourmet Report, 2002-2004, ranked the graduate program in philosophy 20th overall in the nation (UCI tied with UC San Diego). Worldwide, UCI is ranked among the top 10 for its programs in philosophy of physics, decision theory/rational choice theory/game theory, philosophy of math, philosophy of social science and early modern philosophy. It is ranked in the top 15 in medieval philosophy and general philosophy of science. The biennial online report ranked 90 graduate programs in philosophy in the English-speaking world, primarily on the basis of the quality of faculty. UCI's program is co-administered by the Logic and Philosophy of Science Department in the School of Social Sciences and the Philosophy Department in the School of Humanities. Good management BusinessWeek ranks the Graduate School of Management fifth best in the country for its intellectual capital, measured by quantity of faculty research papers and articles published in leading journals. Financial Times ranks GSM as the 27th best MBA school overall in the United States and third in career progress of graduates. The Wall Street Journal ranks GSM eighth for its services for recruiters. U.S. News & World Report ranks GSM 46th overall in its annual rankings of graduate schools for 2004. Geoscience impact UCI was the university with the greatest impact on geoscience research in the 1990s, according to the Institute for Scientific Information, a national publisher of research databases. Innovative centers for research that matters Pilots for the new economy The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology Cal-(IT)2 in collaboration with UC San Diego, is developing innovative new materials and devices to radically expand the capacities of communications and information infrastructures. Waging war on cancer The Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at UCI Medical Center is the only cancer center in Orange County to receive the prestigious National Cancer Institute designation. NCI also selected UCI to develop and manage the largest database ever created on the genetic links in human cancer and to serve as California's only research center in its nationwide Cancer Genetics Network. Supportive partners in education The Center for Educational Partnerships coordinates programs in the K-12 classroom, professional development opportunities for teachers, the community college transfer track, and events that engage parents of current and potential students to provide a multifaceted, yet focused approach to achieving a UC education. Powerful friends The U.S. Department of Energy has designated University Research Park as one of the nation's first Power Parks, launching a national initiative to explore emerging energy technologies in commercial, industrial and research settings. Compelling collaborations The Irvine campus is home to important UC research institutes in genomics, transportation, arts and humanities. Other centers foster developments with diverse goals such as curing spinal cord trauma, aiding fuel cell research, insuring adequate and clean water supplies, eliminating tobacco dependence, examining the impact of technology, exploring alternative and complementary healthcare options, creating standards in computer programming, and measuring success in education. Excellence begins with people A Nobel achievement UCI is the first public university with faculty who received Nobel Prizes in two different fields chemistry and physics in the same year. Exemplary faculty The Donald Bren Endowment provides the university revenue for recruiting leading researchers from around the world. UCI's endowed Donald Bren Professors: National Medal of Science-winning evolutionary biologist Francisco J. Ayala, neuroscientist Thomas J. Carew, immunologist Dr. Paolo Casali, health policy pioneer Dr. Sheldon Greenfield, physicist Wilson Ho, DNA and cancer researcher Wen-Hwa Lee, Nobel Prize-winning atmospheric chemist F. Sherwood Rowland and geneticist Douglas Wallace. UCI's endowed Claire Trevor Professors: acting teacher/director Robert Cohen and choreographer Donald McKayle. Outstanding alumni UCI alumni have captured Pulitzer Prizes in fiction, poetry and editorial cartooning. Destination of choice Internationally acclaimed architect and artist Maya Lin, known for designing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and other major environmental art installations, is creating a new outdoor plaza and entry for the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. Anteater prowess UCI teams have captured 21 national titles in eight sports, and more than 60 individuals have won national titles. Nearly 400 student-athletes have earned All-American honors and more than 30 have participated in Olympic competition. Lifelong learning University Extension enrolls over 20,000 students annually, offering more than 2,500 courses, nearly 40 certificate programs and specialized studies programs. A major economic force Billion with a "B" UCI's annual economic impact on Orange County exceeds $2.65 billion. Smart investment Total 2001-02 extramural funding money coming from outside sources, including federal and state agencies, industry contracts and private foundations was $212 million. A solid foundation UCI's endowment totaled $117.2 million (market value) on June 30, 2002; $79.6 million was held by the UCI Foundation and $37.6 million was held by the UC Regents. |
