A Theory of Fraction Arithmetic Learning
David Braithwaite, postdoctoral researcher, psychology, Carnegie Mellon University will present a theoretical account of children's difficulties with fractions, emphasizing three causes: reliance on reinforcement learning and over-generalization, biased distribution of the practice problems children receive, and lack of conceptual understanding of fraction arithmetic operations.
