Jason Alicea
UCI's Jason Alicea has won a prestigious $50,000 Sloan Research Fellowship to help fund his study of theoretical condensed-matter physics over a two-year period. "It was certainly an enormous honor to have been selected for this very competitive fellowship," said the assistant professor of physics & astronomy. "Currently, I spend most of my time devising new ways of engineering exotic kinds of materials that may eventually allow one to build a quantum computer." The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is a philanthropic, not-for-profit institution based in New York City. Established in 1934 by Alfred Pritchard Sloan Jr., then president and CEO of General Motors Corp., it makes grants in support of original research and education in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and economic performance.
