Earth system science professor Jay Famiglietti, director of the University of California Center for Hydrologic Modeling, met with Kofi Annan, former U.N. secretary general and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, at the 2011 Global Water Summit last month in Berlin. Both gave major speeches at the event, and Famiglietti briefed Annan about the center's use of satellites to monitor groundwater depletion around the planet. "We shared our major concerns over the future of global water issues and the lack of international policy infrastructure to deal with their complexities," Famiglietti said. "We had a great conversation, and Mr. Annan encouraged us to keep working hard." Photo courtesy of John Deputy.
