J. Hillis Miller honored as outstanding UC professor emeritus

J. Hillis Miller
The 2011 Constantine Panunzio Distinguished Emeriti Award honoring emeriti professors in the University of California system has been awarded to J. Hillis Miller, Distinguished Research Professor of Comparative Literature and English at UC Irvine. He has published seven books and 60 articles since his retirement in 2002. His works on critical theory and literature earned international attention; many have been translated into at least 10 languages. His contributions to literary theory and criticism led one critic to call him “the most significant North American literary critic of the 20th Century.” He continues to be in high demand internationally as a lecturer, and he annually returns to UC Irvine to deliver a weeklong “mini-seminar” on critical theory emphasis. Past UCI winners of the award, named after an esteemed professor of sociology at UCLA, include Renee Riese Hubert, English and comparative literature, 1997-98; Ruth Kluger, German, 2001-02; David Easton, political science, 2005-06; and Robert Hine, history, 2007-08.
