UCI's Saltzman, Chen elected AGU fellows

UC Irvine plasma physicist Liu Chen and atmospheric chemist Eric Saltzman have been named 2011 fellows of the prestigious American Geophysical Union. "To be elected an AGU fellow is a special tribute for those who have made exceptional scientific contributions," says the organization. Nominated fellows must have attained acknowledged eminence in the Earth and space sciences. Primary criteria are a major breakthrough or discovery leading to a paradigm shift. The designation is conferred upon not more than 0.1% of all AGU members each year. Chen is a physics & astronomy professor, and Saltzman is an Earth system science pofessor; both are in the School of Physical Sciences. "I am honored by this recognition," said Chen, who explores how solar wind affects the Earth's geomagnetic environment. "Being elected a Fellow of the AGU is a huge honor," agreed Saltzman, whose work focuses on trace gas effects on climate. "It's really a reflection of all the great work done by my students and postdocs over the years."
